The Power of Present Leadership
The Power of Present Leadership
As we step deeper into spring, I’ve been thinking about how often we equate leadership with hustle.
More meetings, more progress, more doing. But what if the real power of leadership isn’t found in
doing more—but in being more present?
After shedding a few unhelpful habits in March, I’ve been asking myself: What happens when I lead from
presence instead of pressure?
The answer: more clarity, better decision-making, deeper connection—and a calm confidence that’s
hard to shake.
Here are three ways I’m practicing presence this season—and how you can too:
1. Protect White Space
Presence requires space to think, process, and lead with intention. If every moment is scheduled,
there’s no room for strategy, creativity, or rest.
- Action: Block at least one 60-minute window on your calendar each week for reflection or focused thinking—label it “Strategy Time” and protect it like your most important meeting.
2. Listen with Intention
Listening is one of the most underrated leadership skills. When you fully listen—without rushing to
respond—you signal respect, build trust, and create psychological safety.
- Action: In your next 1:1 or team meeting, commit to listening without interrupting for at
least 3 full minutes. Jot down what you hear—not just what you want to say.
3. Slow Down to Move Forward
Rushing often leads to mistakes, rework, and misalignment. When we pause, we can move forward
with more clarity and calm.
- Action: Before jumping into your next decision or task, take a 3-minute pause. Ask: “Is this
aligned with my bigger vision?” Then proceed intentionally—or pivot.
Presence is a powerful tool—not just for you, but for the people you lead. What’s one small shift
you can make this month to show up more fully?
